The importance of in Universities and colleges have been emphasised by
several Commissions and Committees headed by eminent educationilists and
professionals from time to time. the University Education Commission (Dr. S.
Radhakrishnan, 1948), the UGC Library Committee (Dr. S. R. Ranganathan; 1957)the
Education Commission (Dr. D.S. Kothari, 1964) , U.G.C. Committee (Prof. R.C.
Mahrotra, 1987) etc. have pointed out the erucial role university and college
Libraries in the development of education in India. Library centred teaching
and learning has gained much significance in higher education in recent years.
