Universal Decimal classification (UDC) is one of the most important and widely used general schemes fo library classification. The scheme is being taught both in theory and practice at Master?s degree evel in the Indian library schools and most of the foreign schools as well as especially in the European Continent.
The present work on UDC (IME-93) consists of two blocks viz., Block-1: Theoretical aspects of UDC and Block-2: Practical Classification with UDC (IME-93). Block-1 deals with genesis and development of UDC and features of International Medium Edition-1993. Block-2 deals with Common and Special Auxiliary tables, synthesis or number building process and classification of titles under the main classes 0/9 with UDC (IME-93).Access devices such as aims and objectives, introduction, section and subsection headings self check exercises, summaries, model answers to self check exercises and lastly assignments have been provided to help the learner to comprehend the theory and practice of UDC ( IME-93) An effort has been made to achieve continuous flow of thought between the blocks and units under each block so as to communicate to the learner, the relevance and relationship of different units and of various and practical aspects of UDC. The author and the publishers fervently hope that this self-instructional manual on UDC (IME-93) will go a long way in meeting the requirements of students of traditional LIS schools, distance learners and teachers of LIS schools, distance learners and teachers of LIS and practicing librarians.
