This Volume is brought out in honour of Prof. M. Bavakutty as a befitting tribute for a dedicated, glorious and competent colleague of the LIS profession yesterday, today and tomorrow. He has been always very good as a teacher, research guide, or organizer, a prolific writer and an active participant and contributor in professional deliberations, both at the national and international planes.
Most of the papers in this volume are hence in the areas of Knowledge Management, Knowledge Organization, Library & Information Systems, Services and professionals in the digital and networked environment. Knowledge Management will facilitate empowering rural and indigenous communities on the one hand and enable the sharing and use of the wealth of tacit community knowledge for the good of the nation, the global community of nations and states. The concern is not only the need to empower the marginalized communities through information out-reaches programmes but also to collect and record the community knowledge, make efforts to understand their cultures, and leverage on the wisdom they possess for the good of the society. Recent development and extension of ICT applications points to the possibilities of bridging the digital divide and better management of rural community knowledge. Attempts to use ICTs to reach out to indigenous and marginalized rural communities with a view to empowering them through implementation of e-governance, providing access to a variety of government documents relevant to the life of rural communities, village kiosks, land-sat imaging and remote sensing, geographical information systems etc
