The modern Libraries and library and information science professionals science professionals face many challenges in the knowledge society driven by the Information Technology. It is also true that the emerging knowledge society offers many new opportunities. The Information and Communication Technology has changed the ways in which the information is published, stored, organized retrieved, accessed, communicated and utilized. Then library without walls in the form of digital repositories and portals are now accessible to users without any barriers of space and time. It is important to discuss and comprehend the implications of these vibrant changes for the benefit of the profession. With this objective in mind an national conference on Future Librarianship in the Knowledge Society was organized in the University of Calicut on 28th and 29th March 2007. This volume contains the papers presented in the conference by the practicing library professionals and library and information science teachers, researchers and students. Both theoretical well as practical papers were presented in the conference. These papers will certainly be instrumental to encourage the library and information science professionals to understand the great responsibility they have to shoulder and the efforts they have to carry out in the coming days in the ever dynamic knowledge society.

Index

M. Bavakutty, a very senior library professional in India is Professor and Head, Department of Library and Information Science and University Librarian of University of Calicut. During 2000-2001, he was the Registrar of University of Calicut. He is the author of four books and about a hundred professional papers. He was the Organising Secretary of the 42nd All India Library Conference of the Indian Library Association held in 1996 at Calicut and was the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the National Seminars held at the university in last three years.

K.C. Abdul Majeed is a senior faculty member of the the Department of Library and Information Science, Farook College, Calicut. He also worked as Library professional in Kerala University Library, Thruvanandapuram. He is the author of three books and about twenty five research papers. He is presently the chief invetigator ofthe UGC research project entitled 'Development of a Scale for measuring the Service quality of College libraries in India.

T.P. O. Nasirudheen is the head of the Department of Library and Information Science, Farook College, Calicut.Formerly he was library professional in the Centre for Development Studies, Thruvanandapuram. He contributed several research papers in professional journals/seminars/conferences. He is presently the chief investigator of the UGC research project entitled 'Library support to the Distance mode of Education.'
