Rapid advances in information processing, storage and communication technologies have revolutionized the role of the libraries and information centers all over the world. Academic research and development organizations are supported by well equipped library and information service unit to augment the objective of a parent organization. Literature explosion is the natural outcome of vast amount of research and number of users for variety of needs. The growth of digital repositories offers the prospect of extending the current scholarly communication system in order to make effective use of material that would otherwise have remained unpublished and inaccessible.

            With the primary objective of providing the collective information to the readers and scholars this book entitled “Information Management: Envisioning the Future Libraries” is presented. This book is an outcome of efforts of enthusiastic researchers and scholars who have submitted their scholarly research themes for publication which would help the readers to travel along with the key concepts discussed.

            The book is published as a set of three volumes with two chapters in the first volume, three chapters in the second volume and four chapters in the third volume. The concepts and key matters given in each chapter are clubbed logically and neatly. In the first chapter, under the theme of ‘Knowledge Organization and Processing’, stress is given on semantic web technology, XML, fuzzy neural network, knowledge management and metadata. In the second chapter, ‘Digital Libraries and E-Content Management’ emerging concepts such as digital libraries, digital preservation, virtual libraries, paperless society and e-content management are discussed in detail. ‘Web Technologies and E-Learning’ is the main theme of chapter three, in which E- Learning services, web technologies, social networks and evaluation of websites are discussed.  

            In chapter Four entitled ‘Library Management and Marketing of Information Products and Services’ is framed as the main topic, under which informatics, marketing of information, service marketing, and financial marketing in institutional libraries are presented. ‘Innovative and Best Practices in Library and Information Science” is the core topic of the chapter five. Best practices in school, college, university libraries, web tools, assistive technologies for the disabled and public library scenario are explored in detail.

            In chapter Six, ‘Information Use and User Studies” is the core of discussion.

                        Chapter Seven talks about ‘Library and Information Science Education and Research’. ‘Human Resource Management (HRM) and Total Quality Management (TQM)’ is the theme of Chapter Eight and ‘E-Resources, Consortia and Open Access Resources” is the key concept of presentation in the last chapter. The last two chapters go in the depth of total quality management in various libraries and e-resources consortia, open access resources, open end access and pubmed database.

            It is hoped that this book would go a long way in helping the professionals, teachers and students grasp the evolving and emerging concepts in the field of library and information science.

V.P. RAMESH BABU is presently working as Librarian and Head, Department of Library and Information Science in Rev. Jacob Memorial Christian College, Ambilikkai, Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu for the past 16 years. Previously he worked in the Environmental Special Library of Justice Bhagwati Environment and Development Institution (BEDI) at Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. He has completed B.Sc in Chemistry, M.A. in Tamil and Indian Languages, M.L.I.Sc, M.Phil and Ph. D in Library and Information Science and PGDCA and has three books to his credit. He has successfully organized state, national and international level conferences and workshops.

He is an active member of various professional bodies such as ILA, IALA, IASLIC, SALIS and KLA to name a few. His current areas of interest in the discipline are library automation, information sources and services, cataloguing and classification, information communication and technology.

 

Ms. D. UMAMAHESWARI is presently working as Librarian, Christian College of Nursing, Ambilikkai, Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu for the past 13 years. Prior to this she has worked in Teni Melappettai Hindu Nadar Uravin Murai Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Teni as a school librarian. She has two year working experience as a Special Library Librarian in FEDCOT ( Federation of Consumer Organisation – Tamil Nadu ), Dindigul. She has completed B.Sc in Home Science from Gandhigram Rural

Institute – Deemed University, Gandhigram, B.L.I.Sc and M.L.I.Sc from Madurai Kamaraj Univesity, Madurai and M. Phil from Alagappa Univesity, Karaikudi.

She presented research articles in many State, National and International Level Seminars and conferences. She has published articles in national and international level journals, conference and seminars.  She is the life member of Indian Academic Library Association. She is pursuing her Ph.D. in library and information science from Gandhigram Rural Institute, Gandhigram, Tamil Nadu. Her area of interest are library management, cataloguing, classification, application of information technology in the field of library and information services.
