The present work--- is an indepth study by experts from the fields of Library & Information Sciences or Computer Science---- is an attempt to (i) determine the factors that are at work against adoption of computers by Indian Libraries, (ii) emphasize the need for adoption of computers in the changing information environment, (iii) present a vivid picture of Indian Scenario of computer application, and (iv) discuss the areas, operation and services in which computer application is essential . Computers have tremendous capacity to revolutionize Library operation and services. But in our country, except a few exceptions, libraries continue with the traditional methods that are mostly manual, slow and cumbersome. It is a happy sing during the current decade there has been growing recognition on the part of the policy makers and political leaders that information is an essential resource for socio-economic development and that the proper conservation, organization and communication of this resource in the Library through latest technology is essential. Computerization of Library and information operations and services has thus become an accepted policy for implementation before the nation entered the 21st Century. It is hoped that the work will succeed in bringing computer awareness among Library and information scientists.
